What’s Cooking: Strawberry-Banana Protein Smoothie Bowl

February 28, 2018

I’m a smoothie bowl aficionado. I have one every day, sometimes twice I day and I love it! It all started when I visited Kauai, Hawaii in 2015 and had my first acai smoothie bowl. It was sweet, tangy and cold. I remember being completely satisfied and knew I was hooked. When I got back to Seattle I made it my mission to replicate that first taste. Since then my recipes have evolved from sweet and fruity to rich and chocolately.

I use a 100% whey protein powder to sustain my muscles and usually prefer chocolate protein because it blends well with my smoothies. Although this particular recipe includes chocolate protein power you can use vanilla or none at all.

What I love about this recipe is it’s a wonderful ice cream substitute! I’m obsessed with the stuff and wanted to cut down my intake. With its thick and creamy consistency this smoothie bowl tastes almost identical to chocolate ice cream, even without the protein powder. Needless to say I haven’t brought home ice cream in awhile.

Here’s what you’ll need

  • 1/2 cup almond milk
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons nutella
  • 1 cup frozen bananas
  • 1 cup frozen strawberries
  • 1 tablespoon coconut oil
  • 3/4 cup chocolate protein powder

Add the milk and frozen ingredients to your blender first and then add the coconut oil, protein powder and nutella on top. Blend until all items are broken down and you’re left with a smooth mixture. Because of the addition of the whey protein you want to avoid over mixing your smoothie which will give it a lightly whipped consistency as opposed to thick and creamy. Once you’re done empty your contents into a bowl and top your smoothie with your desired treats. I love to add more fruit, granola and chocolate chips to mine!
